Light and Flight Photography

Capturing birds in flight is not easy, and even if you achieve focus, the resulting image of a bird frozen against a blue sky often fails to engage the viewer. However, learning how to use the light, choosing the setting, and using environmental assets such as water to capture reflected light can add drama and interest to your images.

Join me for this workshop during the golden hour to learn the principles of capturing birds in flight using light to make the ordinary more extraordinary.

  • Assessing the wildlife scene and choosing your location based on light.
  • How to choose appropriate aperture, shutter and ISO settings.
  • Exposing for the lightest part of your subject.
  • The different types and uses of exposure metering modes.
  • Shooting action/moving subjects by using continuous focus modes.
  • Selecting single or small group focus points to track your subject.

  • Your interchangeable lens camera.
  • Preferable telephoto/zoom lens between 200mm and 600mm, the longer the better
